Risk Reliability Engineering: Adapting Asset Condition Frameworks for Practical Flexibility

Revolutionising Asset Management SAS-AM's Pioneering Approach in DTP's Asset Condition Assessment Project (ACAP)

OBJECTIVES

The key objective was to develop a unified, clear, and strategic framework for measuring asset condition, rectifying the previously diverse and non-strategic methodologies that hindered comparative analysis and strategic planning. This goal was in direct response to the need for enhanced clarity and consistency in asset management, as highlighted by criticisms from Victoria's auditor general.

SOLUTIONS

The project involved creating a new asset condition rating framework that effectively demarcated assets into simple and complex categories, with a special focus on the extent of complex assets. The process included extensive stakeholder engagement through workshops and reviews, ensuring that the framework was well-aligned with the needs and insights of key stakeholders.

Additionally, comprehensive training packages were developed, complete with worked examples, contextual information, and justifications to ensure a thorough understanding and effective implementation of the new framework.

BENEFITS

STRATEGIC DECISION MAKING

The unified framework facilitates informed, strategic decisions across varied asset classes.

FUNDING PRIORITISATION

Clearer asset condition insights enable more effective allocation of funds and resources.

OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY

Streamlined assessments through the new framework enhance overall operational efficiency.

Criticality scoring is broken. Shane Scriven argues the better question is not which asset ranks highest, but how each asset is critical and to whom.
