There's a growing tension in asset management that not enough people are talking about. On the other, those same organisations need to maintain compliance with ISO 55001 and demonstrate that their asset management system is structured, documented, and auditable.

The problem? Most AI implementations aren't designed with compliance in mind. They're designed to deliver results. And while results matter, an AI tool that improves maintenance outcomes but creates an audit trail gap is a liability, not an asset.

The 2024 revision of ISO 55001 doesn't mention artificial intelligence by name. But several of its clauses have direct implications for how organisations integrate AI into their asset management systems. Getting this right isn't optional if you're certified or working toward certification.

Clause 7.5: Documented Information and the AI Black Box

Clause 7.5 requires organisations to maintain documented information that supports the operation of their asset management system. This includes any process, procedure, or tool that influences how asset decisions are made.

Here's where AI gets uncomfortable. Many machine learning models, particularly deep learning approaches, are difficult to explain in plain terms. They take inputs, process them through layers of mathematical operations, and produce outputs. The model "knows" something, but articulating why it knows it is another matter entirely.

For ISO 55001 compliance, this matters. If an AI model is recommending that you defer maintenance on a pump station or escalate the criticality of a transformer, you need documentation that explains the basis for that recommendation. Not just the output, but the logic, the data inputs, the confidence level, and the validation process.

Clause 8.1 requires that organisations plan, implement, and control the processes needed to meet asset management objectives. Any tool or system that influences operational decisions needs to be governed within this framework.

The risk with AI is that it often operates in parallel to existing control frameworks rather than within them. A maintenance planner might use an AI dashboard to prioritise work orders, but that dashboard might not be formally integrated into the organisation's operational planning process. It exists as a helpful tool rather than a controlled system element.

This creates a gap. If an auditor asks how maintenance priorities are determined and the answer involves an AI tool that isn't referenced in your operational planning documentation, you have a conformity issue. The tool might be delivering excellent results, but from a standards perspective, it's an uncontrolled input.

The fix is straightforward but requires discipline: formally integrate AI tools into your operational planning documentation, define roles and responsibilities for AI-assisted decisions, and establish clear escalation paths for when AI recommendations conflict with existing plans.

Clause 9.1: Monitoring, Measurement, Analysis and Evaluation

Clause 9.1 is arguably where AI has the most to offer and the most potential to create compliance challenges simultaneously.

AI excels at monitoring and measurement. It can process sensor data at scale, identify degradation patterns that humans miss, and predict failures with increasing accuracy. For condition monitoring and performance evaluation, AI is genuinely transformative.

But the clause doesn't just require monitoring. It requires evaluation. That means someone, a qualified human, needs to be assessing whether the AI's outputs are valid, whether the models are performing as expected, and whether the insights are being translated into appropriate action.

What we've found is that organisations often implement AI monitoring tools with great enthusiasm but neglect the evaluation loop. The model runs, the dashboards update, and everyone assumes the numbers are right. Until they're not. And when they're not, the absence of a structured evaluation process means the error can compound before anyone notices.

Build model performance review into your management review cycle. Track prediction accuracy over time. Document instances where AI outputs were incorrect and what corrective actions were taken. This isn't just good practice for compliance, it makes your AI implementation more reliable.

The Documentation Trap

Beyond specific clauses, there's a broader challenge that cuts across the entire standard: the documentation trap.

ISO 55001 is built on the premise that asset management decisions are traceable. You should be able to follow the thread from strategic objectives through to operational actions and back again. Every decision has a rationale, every action has an owner, and every outcome is measured.

AI can disrupt this traceability. When a model processes thousands of data points and produces a recommendation, the traditional documentation approach of "we assessed X, considered Y, and decided Z" doesn't quite capture what happened. The decision process isn't linear, and the "reasoning" isn't human.

This doesn't mean AI decisions can't be documented. It means organisations need new documentation approaches: model cards that describe what each AI tool does and its limitations, decision logs that record AI recommendations alongside human actions, and validation records that demonstrate ongoing model performance.

Clause 9.1 (Monitoring and Evaluation): Do you have a structured process for evaluating AI outputs, not just consuming them?

Clause 10.2 (Nonconformity and Corrective Action): What happens when an AI recommendation leads to a poor outcome? Is there a process for investigating and learning from AI-related nonconformities?

When AI Helps Compliance vs When It Creates Risk

Let's be real: AI can genuinely strengthen your compliance position. Automated monitoring reduces the chance of missed inspections. Predictive models provide evidence-based justification for maintenance decisions. Natural language processing can help manage the mountain of documented information that ISO 55001 requires.

But AI creates compliance risk when it operates outside your management system, when decisions can't be explained, when model performance isn't monitored, or when there's no human accountability for AI-influenced outcomes.

The distinction isn't about the technology itself. It's about governance. Organisations that treat AI as a managed component of their asset management system will find it strengthens compliance. Those that treat it as an add-on will find it creates gaps that auditors will eventually identify.
